Culkin describes the end of Hays and Cushman's relationship referring to this event: "Harriet witnessed the couple's bitter end …. Another woman, Emma Stebbins, a forty-one-year-old American sculptor from a wealthy family who had first arrived in Rome the year before, seems to have been at the root of fight. In the spring of 1857 Cushman traveled to Naples with Stebbins and soon after ended her volatile relationship with Hays. By the summer the couple had settled into an apartment at 38 Via Gregoriana." (Culkin 60–61)
