Text

[2959] Dear friend. Thanks for your note; which I was beginning to expect; with some curiosity. — and thanks for your steady efforts to see justice done to "the Duchess." – It is much +++ +++  (I think) provided she gets a hearing at all — & a little space to +++ in, that [illegible crossed out] every [inserted] other play should be disposed of. before mine as I am impudent enough to fear no competition: — since, almost I should like to settle the question as regards the public. & key power of pleasing them. Probably, then. the strife will be between this & Lovell's [Lowell's?] play: — In any care. beyond the certain fidget. which be a man laid as a stone, will from time to time wear one. When the matter is has been [last two words inserted] so long protracted. —I feel truly little in the affair, save the encouragment of your great kindness: Which I take as encouragement. in as much as it is not [illegibly crossed out] merely pleasing but must be [last two words inserted] sincere: from the nature & manner of its manifestations – I am sorry you should have been ill: but this new play will give you rest, & if ours comes, I fear you will not have much more, for a while. Till I see the end of the affair it would be crazy

[2959] to think of trying to write again. for the theater. — If Should [inserted] "The Duchess" be done. — However, — I know that I am not. Meanwhile I am Most faithfully yrs
Henry F. Chorley.
I see the Sunday Times, announces, Sir E. L. +++ Lytton's "Cromwell" as coming after Christmas! – I suppose this is — A Sunday +++!
