Description

Cushman thanks James for his efforts with respect to her adopted son Ned Cushman who has found a position in Boston. In Boston, Ned is expected to gain a general knowledge of the business and study bookkeeping and French. Emma Crow and Ned Cushman "will be married as soon as Ned can earn any thing & show himself a steady reliable man." Fields is also asked to provide Ned with books and money, as well as a place to stay. Furthermore, Charlotte Cushman is worried about her engagement in New York. People might be too distracted to come and see her on stage because of the upcoming elections.

[page 1] Thanks dear kind friend. for your kind interest in & efforts for my boy. who bears you this. He returned to me quite sanguine that Mr Brown would entertain the idea of having him. & hoped to have gone to him on Thursday for a favourable answer - but last night he received a letter from my old friend Mr Cochran who has found some thing else for him. by the aid of Mr Brown I believe - & he goes to Boston I hope to be settled in a good house where he will get a general knowledge of the business. & facilities in selling goods - which however this opportunity may resolve

[page 2] itself. may [?] be of good to him in whatever business he may eventually put his capital into. Thank you for this & so many other good things that I know not where to begin or end. Will you kindly help him to a boarding house where he will be cured for a little. some good genteel place where he may form nice connexions [sic]. He is going to try and persuade his grand mother to stay with him a little until he gets settled a bit. Will you take a little notice of him. & give him a little counsel as to his associates. He is going to study French with a master. and bookkeeping. which will be well for him to know. I shall be glad if you will from time to time let

[page 3] him have any money that he may want. when I have failed to supply him with enough. advise him a little as to what books to read & let him have what looks he may want to +++ +++. just advising him if he is likely to be too extravagant - as you so well know how to do. without alarming his pride. or his faith in you. You see how much I ask of you. but I trust your goodness with entire faith. Mr Crow the soul of kindness & goodness. he encourages him in every way. & will be his best friend. He only wants him to wait until he is able to earn enough to support a wife. & then he will have a house & furniture & income given to him & his wife to let them live as she has been accus

[page 4] -tomed to live. & as Mr Crow has fixed no date to this. They will be married as soon as Ned can earn any thing & show himself a steady reliable man. We leave here tomorrow morning for New York. No 20. W. 16" Street will find us - & we hope on the 15" or 16" to receive you. & show you how much we love & value you. I am beginning to look with fear & tumbling to my engagement in New York. The election. & many distractions occupy peoples thoughts too much to let them think of me while +++ is "over the way". never mind Boston Engagt will come after the Election & that will be fine -
God bless you ever - Your attached friend
