notwithstanding the long interval of distance & silence - I have often thought of you & remembered your kindness & sympathy in our suffering & anxiety before we left Rome - you seemed to have a prevision of what was before us - as I had - though I could not realize fully - as was near [?] fortunate - what it was to be ! - we two have
[page 2] been through the valley of shadow of death together - and by the goodness of God - permitted to return - for however real and serious Charlotte's danger has been - the pain & anguish has been equal to many deaths. Thanks dear friend deep & true - for your kind little note, - it finds us still here, in this in this scene of our +++- but I am glad to tell you steadily
[page 3]gaining health and strength to be able to make our fresh[?] start - we shall stop a little time in England yet - we hope to get to Rome somewhere about the end of Nov 2. It will be good to see you & all dear friends again!
I think of you happily at work in your studio & shall look forward to see +++ +++
