[...] Though all the world but us fled away from the dear old pension on the Lake of Lucerne with the coming of the immemorial flitting day, the 1st of September, the doomsday of Summer rest and pleasuring, the real charms of the place seemed just then only at their highest. The grounds, woods, and shrubberies around us were taking more mellow and exquisite tints, the mountains richer shades, tenderer lights and grander shadows were resting on that lake of lakes, the darling of sun and storm, lovely in its smiles and sleep, and terribly beautiful in its frowns and sudden rages. I was especially reluctant to leave the place. I felt that no spot in the old world could be so good for me, so balmy and restful. [...]
Yet our drive from Lucerne to Alpnach was a charming bit of travel. We went by quite, shady ways, through a smiling country, past quaint hamlets and old chapels and picturesque cottages and bright little gardens, bursting with dahlias and marigolds, and with trailing banners of nasturtiums, morning-glories, and clematis hung out "on the outer wall."
