Description
The letter could be dated to Feb 17 because of the letter from Charlotte Cushman to Annie Fields, Feb 17, 1871, in which Cushman talks about Mary's note as well, fearing that Mary "may have been indulging herself at the expense of my well being."

[page 1] Newport. Friday 17 1871
Dear Mary.
your kind note of yesterday I have just recd & thank you very much for all your kindness but - I dont [sic] exactly know why yet I get a little panic of horror from it, that as you have been speaking of me to many people you may have told them of my present state of mind (&body) with regard to myself and as this would give me excessive pain & mortification. I write
[page 2] this one little word just to say to you that I spoke to you here in my own rooms quite in family confidence & I dont [sic] want any soul out of my family to know about my physical being well or ill – so please have a care, & if you have spoken to any one freely of my present state - just do me the favor - & set it right & dont [sic] let any one know how I am. Other than that I seem perfectly well
[page 3] I hope sister & Lucius [?, inserted] will come down to me on Saty. 25th if she can I shall go back with her to Cambridge for a couple of days. There to Mrs Hunt for a couple of days & then I must get to New York. & pay any visit you may wish me to make to you later on! I have news from Emma this morning. Nino seems in quite a bad way & it worries me with love to Robert & the children
[page 4] yours aff
