Text

The eastern correspondent of a western newspaper, after congratulating Charlotte Cushman on her continued virginity, thus commiserates some of her married sisters in profession: The noblest of actresses, mothers and wives, Adelaide Ristori, brought to this country a handsome good-for-nothing husband [...]. [...] I have seen her going home with a servant as escort [...]. I could fill a column with these maritial victims in the theatrical ranks. I know Charlotte Cushman, knowing as much as she does of professional unhappiness, is perfectly satisfied with her lot, though some of the ignorant sympathize with her husbandless condition.
