Text

"As I anticipated, the Chestnut Street and National Theatres were crowded on Saturday evening to witness the two greatest living actors personate the character of Richelieu. There is a variety of opinions upon the manner in which each acted the part; I am candid enough to acknowledge that I greatly prefer Forrest to Macready in the character. The performance of Miss Charlotte Cushman as Julie, was the best I have ever seen; in tact, her's is the only proper conception of the part I have yet witnessed upon the stage. This talented lady is rising rapidly in her profession, and may safely be pronounded the best actress at this time on the American boards."
