Celia Logan says of Charlotte Cushman, in the Washington Chronicle: "My father was the originator of what is now known as 'combination' companies, and with his band of strolling players she played many a little part, and it was my father's advice which decided her to go to England. When the actress, in later days, had become famous and wealthy, she appeared in the West, and my sister Eliza, then painfully struggling into prominence, was called upon to play such parts as "Juliet" to her "Romeo." Forgetful of her own girlish trials, and my parent's efforts to mitigate them, she threw every obstacle in my sister's way which an old and experienced actress knows so well how to do, to baffle, disconcert, and intimidate a young and inexperienced one with 'a hate known only to theatricals.' Nor was it in my sister's case alone, but every actress she met, especially if they possessed those personal attractions which even red-hot partisanship cannot claim for Charlotte Cushman."
