Text
"At the Chestnut street theatre, last evening, Macready, the great tragedian, made his first appearance, in Shakspeare's [sic] tragedy of Macbeth, he play ing [sic] the hero. The house was cowded in almost every part to overflowing, and the reception he met with must have been most gratifying. The applause at his entrance was deafening, which he acknowledged in a proper and dignified bow. Mr Ryder was also greeted in quite a rapturous manner. Miss Charlotte Cushman enacted Lady Macbeth, and we do no more than sheer justice to this accomplished lady and excellent actress, when we assert that her performance of the character was excellent in the extreme; in fact, reputation would not be hazarded in pronouncing it the best upon the American stage. At the close of the performance, Mr. Macready was called out, and received the compliment by appearing before the audience, bowing in acknowledgment, and retiring in that manner. He will make his second appearance on Wednesday evening, in the character of Hamlet, the result of which I will inform you."
