Text

[page 1] Dear Mr. Fields.
Do pardon me for annoying you so much, but I should like to know, if you can tell me on what day the "History of My Pets" will be out. I wish to know in order to make some plans for leaving. And one other thing I should like to ask for.— You have generously suffered me to overdraw once or twice. So I suppose there will be very little coming to me from my publications this fall. But it will be necessary for me to revise during this month about $250. the two hundred are due on as [inserted] payments, and the fifty I need for traveling expenses & c.— Now if you are not afraid to trust to Grace and her fortunes, will you thus far oblige me, and I will

[page 2] endeavor in future to keep within bounds. But I trust you will feel quite safe in doing me this kindness.— I endorse directions for sending the box of medical books of which I spoke to you some time since I am just off for Amesbury for a day or two merely.— Am half sick with a hard cold and the blurs. How are you this detestable damp (damnable) weather!— A tender ward in Ticknor's ear. A gentle grasp of Whipple's hand. If I had a moment's time I'd finish the stanza. but the postman's almost at the door. Ever a firm friend of the firm and particularly of the "poet publisher".
