I have often thought of you in connection with Mr [Dennis R.] Alward and have been tempted to write you and inquire how you were, but time has sped along many months since we met, and I've not done the thing in any mind to do.
I often feel grateful for having had such a friend as Mr Alward and feel that in his troubled days I was of some help to him.
He was at his best a rare man, and deserved of fate a better ending

[reverse]: of life.
My success in disposing of the +++ effects satisfactorily I cannot now understand and do not think it would be repeated. As to disposing of Charlotte Cushmans letters to Mr. Baker[?], it is a mistake. He came in to see me about them and importuned one to show them to him. I somehow did not care to part with them & would not name a price for a batch of letters of hers, of Mr Seward + others, at last he made me an offer + I would not accept; + then he increased it + finally came in one day + doubled it, with no result.

[3723]: I heard of Sallies death what a memory of Charlotte Cushman has gone from earth! I have destroyed most of her notes - will look on[?] and see what more I can find and send you. I find a number of letters from Miss Stebbins - but not of any use to keep + think I will destroy them. When in N.Y. in June or anyway to the commencement at Yale - I came near getting time to see you, but an old friend met me and took me to lunch and before I knew it, I had to hurry off to the New Haven boat, it being on a Saturday afternoon. My son graduated in the Academic Dept. - in fine shape. was finished

[reverse]: of the Yale Glee Club [last three words underlined] one of the Class [underlined] day committee, + a Scroll + Keys man. He goes to N.Y. to the College of Physicians Surgeons in Sept, having chosen medicine as a profession. Glad to hear from you always
Yours very truly
Byron C Smith

I find only these three letters now, but think there are more B.C.S.</text>
