Bradford (1025) mentions her for an account of Charlotte Cushman.

Fielding and Sorensen write about Jane Carlyle and Charlotte Cushman's first meeting: "On 28 August [1861] Jane met her deeply admiring Charlotte great American actress, who bad long wished to know her. She had been thrilled to hear about Jane from Geraldine Jewsbury, who had first taken her up—as Jane thought—in 'a blaze of enthusiasm' and fit of jealousy 'of me and Mrs. Paulet' (19 Jan. 1846: CL [Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle (Durham, NC, 1970-)] 20:109). A little later she had written as a liar (CL 20:38). Now, at last, they were brought together by young Sarah Dilberoglue, wife of Stauros, see the Introduction, xxvi-xxvii. Charlotte told her partner Emma Stebbins that Jane 'came at one o'clock and stayed until eight. .. Clever, witty, calm, cool, unsmiling, unsparing, a raconteur unparalleled, a manner unimitable, a behavior scrupulous, and a power invincible,— a combination rare and strange exists in that plain, keen, unattractive, yet unescapable (Charlotte Cushman: Letters and Memories of Her Life, ed. Emma Stebbins, New York, 1878, 84). Grapes and flowers were despatched at once, with an accompanying note." (Jane Carlyle: Newly Selected Letters 263)
